Bowel Cancer Screening

23rd May, 2005
In October 2004 the government announced the national roll out of Bowel Cancer Screening (Colorectal cancer) starting in April 2006. This was based on the success of the work done at the pilot screening sites in England and Scotland (an evaluation of these can be found here). People in their sixties will be invited to have a faecal occult blood test (FOBT) which looks for the presence of blood in the faeces. The FOBT will be returned to a screening laboratory for analysis and those that are positive will be offered colonoscopy to identify the cause of the blood in the faeces. Those with negative FOBTs will be offered further FOBTs at 2 yearly intervals.
