Lab Tests Online-UK Partners
Lab Tests Online-UK is the product of a unique collaboration among professional societies representing the clinical laboratory community. The concept was originally conceived by the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), and launched in the United States of America as Lab Tests Online. The potential value of the site was identified by the Association for Clinical Biochemistry (ACB), and through generous funding by a grant from the Health Foundation, it has been able to licence the material from Lab Tests Online and create a site tailored to the UK public.
The Association for Clinical Biochemistry (ACB) was founded in 1953, and is one of the oldest such Associations in the world. Based in the United Kingdom, it is a professional body dedicated to the practice and promotion of clinical science. The Association has medical and non-medical members in all major UK healthcare laboratories, in many university departments and in several commercial companies. The links with its Corporate Members leads to a fruitful relationship with the clinical diagnostics industry. ACB liaises with and is consulted by many national and international organizations on issues relating to clinical biochemistry.
The American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) is the principal association of professional laboratory scientists, including MDs and PhDs. Our members develop and perform tests conducted in hospital laboratories, clinics, medical centers and other health care settings. The AACC provides national and worldwide leadership in advancing the practice and profession of clinical laboratory medicine and its role in improving health care. AACC's mission includes educating the public about the value of laboratory testing with the overall goal of improving the public's health. AACC launched Lab Tests Online in the US in 2001.
The Royal College of Pathologists' mission is to promote excellence in the practice of pathology and to be responsible for maintaining standards through training, examinations and professional development. Pathology is a relatively young science. The first pathologists dealt with all areas of the subject, but rapid advances quickly meant that pathologists too became specialists. The Royal College of Pathologists was established in 1962 to co-ordinate this development and maintain the internationally renowned standards and reputation of British pathology.
The Department of Health describes Lab Tests Online as an excellent resource for patients and others who provide healthcare. The Department describes Lab Tests Online as tailored for the needs of the UK healthcare service and, in supporting Lab Tests Online-UK, it requires Lab Tests Online to work closely with the Department and with Connecting for Health in support of current initiatives to enable patient access to healthcare records, including lab tests results. The Department expects Lab Tests Online information to reflect internationally agreed best practice and support NHS programmes, such as those for cancer and Downs syndrome screening.
