Cervical Smear

Also known as: PAP Test
Formal name: Papanicolaou smear, cervical/vaginal cytology
Related tests: Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Trichomonas wet prep

Why get tested?
To screen for early abnormalities which, if left untreated, could lead to cervical cancer and for certain vaginal or uterine infections

When to get tested?
In the UK, all woman between the ages of 25 and 64 are eligible for a free cervical smear test every three to five years.

Sample required?
Cells from the cervical area (neck of the womb)
