Gonorrhoea (GC), Chlamydia, and Syphilis
These are the three most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). These diseases are caused by bacterial infections and can lead to a miscarriage, or infect the baby prior to, or during delivery.
In the U.K. pregnant women are routinely tested for syphilis at the time of the first antenatal visit. A positive test usually means the individual has been infected in the past or is currently infected. A negative test result usually means the woman is not currently infected, however, it is possible that an infection is too new to detect. If you are concerned about other STD’s, and think you might be at risk, you should discuss this with your doctor or midwife.
